Presents the experience of theoretical development and practical use of mathematical economic models of development planning of the meso-level objects (sub-sectors, sectors, multi- and interindustry complexes). It is noted that the developed models and methods for optimization of the development and distribution of the industries were widely used in the USSR and were the unique contribution of Soviet economists, mathematicians to the world theory and practice of mathematical economic models and mathematical tools. The possibilities of using economic and mathematical modeling of meso-level objects in the current conditions of the Russian market economy (for example, a complex of petrochemical industry).
