The article deals with the complex and controversial history of fi rst Russian paper money – assignation. They have operated in the Russian economy over 70 years since 1769 and until 1843, and made a signifi cant contribution to its development. Assignation throughout his stories were practically the only resource for the fi nancing of economic development of the Russian state. Thanks ассигнациям Russia has essentially become the fi rst European country to use the possibilities of paper money at the decision of problems of public Finance. The author also reveals the positive and negative sides of the fi rst Russian paper money.
