Abstract
The author examines the image of the First Russian revolution that was being constructed by the socalled "gentlemen-socialists" - William Walling, Arthur Bullard, Kellogg Durland and Ernest Poole - within the American radical discourse concerning the prospects of the Russian modernization process.
