Abstract
Expeditions organized by the St. Petersburg Academy of Science during the 18 th century collected vast amounts of data regarding ice conditions on Russian rivers. They paid particular attention to events accompanying the breaking and drifting of ice and flooding that created dangers and problems for the local population. This article analyzes and systematizes observations made by expeditionary groups.
