- Abstract
- The article pays homage to a unique scholarly society of late 19 th century Russia – the Imperial Society of Devotees of Natural Sciences, Anthropology and Ethnography at Moscow University (OLEAE). The society was famous for its research and for efforts to popularize scientific knowledge among the public. It also served as a model for many other societies of naturalists established after 1860 at various universities throughout Russia. Many of OLEAE’s accomplishments are either nearly forgotten today or sometimes claimed by other scholarly organizations and societies. The story provides an example of how thoughtless reforms and mergers can destroy effectively functioning academic institutions and erase them from historical memory.
