Abstract
The author describes the activities of the Commission on the History of the Academy of Sciences (KIAN, 1938-1953), which worked to produce a general history of the Academy of Sciences. The Commission's efforts resulted in the publication of “Essays on the History of the Academy of Sciences, 1725-1945”, along with “Materials on the History of the Soviet Academy of Sciences” (1917-1945), which together represented the first historical study of the Soviet Academy of Sciences. These works also contained bibliographical reference information about the Academy's members and awardees. Materials prepared by KIAN's researchers were also used in the “History of the Soviet Academy of Sciences” (Moscow, 1958-1964), published by the Academy's Institute for the History of Science and Technology.
